ScholarshipEvery year the Kalisher Scholarship is awarded to an outstanding student at one of the eight universities and colleges which offer the Bar Vocational Course; the award covers the fees of the BVC for the year. Bursaries are also awarded during the year on a discretionary basis.
The scholarship was set up in the memory of Michael Kalisher Q. C. Michael was an advocate of tremendous talent and energy and a much loved member of the Criminal Bar. He graduated from Bristol University in 1962 and enjoyed a successful career as a Solicitor before being called to the Bar at Inner Temple in 1970. Once set on a path at the criminal bar, he quickly rose to the top of the profession, taking silk in 1984, becoming a Bencher in 1989 and serving as Chairman of the Criminal Bar Association from 1991-3. He was Head of Chambers at 1 (now 2) Hare Court and was tipped for Chairman of the Bar Council when, in 1996, he learned of the illness that in a few short months was to end his life: he was only 55.
The Criminal Bar Association set up the Scholarship in his memory; Michael specified that he wanted the scholarship to be awarded to aspiring barristers who demonstrate not only intellectual rigour, but also the sense of humour and joy which characterised Michael.
The Scholarship has now been running for eight years. All eight BVC providers have either already sponsored the Scholarship for a year or are about to do so, so that students at all eight institutions have had the opportunity to apply.
