July-29-2010 12:00 AM The Criminal Bar Association Of England & Wales & The Kalisher Scholarship Trust Present: The Kalisher Essay Competition 20101st Prize - £5,000 2nd Prize - £2,000 “In truth there is no right to jury trial in serious cases; if you are indicted for murder you have no right to a jury trial. The concept of "right" implies an element of free choice. The ECHR is currently considering whether a failure to provide an opt-out right is a breach of Article 6. Should a defendant be given the right to opt out and be tried by judge alone or judge and lay assessors? Please advise the Attorney General as to the arguments for and against" Entry Conditions· Maximum word length is 2,000 words on above topic· Prize is open to all pupils in criminal sets in England and Wales· Pupils must be sponsored by their chambers to enter at a cost of £100 per pupil with a maximum of two pupils per chambers· Cheques to be made out to the Kalisher Scholarship· Chambers must indicate an intention to compete for the prize and provide sponsorship by Friday 16th July· Essays must be sent in hard copy to 9 Bedford Row DX 453 LDE by 1600 Thursday 29th July · Winner and runner up will be announced in September· Prizes will be awarded by the Attorney General, this year’s speaker at the Kalisher Lecture, in the Old Bailey, on Tuesday 12th October All enquiries regarding entry to be made to:Max Hardy Secretary to the Kalisher ScholarshipEmail: max.hardy@9bedfordrow.co.uk
