Monday Message 15.04.24

Dear colleagues and friends,

This week we welcomed the Japanese Federation of Bar Associations to London and the CBA assisted with a visit to the Central Criminal Court – with thanks to Grace Ong of our Social Mobility Committee who attended and HHJ Sarah Whitehouse KC and Fiona Adler at the Central Criminal Court.  Next time you are there have a look at the post-war paintings beyond Court 1 and spot the painter who painted himself in!

We plan to set up a Zoom meeting between Criminal barristers and the JFBA shortly to share our knowledge and experience of the criminal law in England & Wales, the first will be on “adverse inferences from silence”.  Barristers who are interested in attending please email me on [email protected].  The date for this will be announced at the end of April.

CBA Scholarships for attendance on the SEC Advocacy course at Keble College, Oxford

We have 5 Scholarships worth £1800 each to award to advocates who would like to attend this career-making course.  Last year I was lucky to be on one of the juries with the leader of the SEC and we witnessed for ourselves the progress of some advocates on the course.  We cannot emphasise enough how much value this course gives to advocates who have attended.

To qualify for the course, you must be a practising member of the Bar, over three years’ call at the time of attending the course.  I should also make it clear that the Course is not just for junior tenants, they have in the past had more senior practitioners (10 years call and above and occasionally Silks), including those returning to practice following career breaks for various reasons.

The course takes place at Keble College, Oxford from Tuesday 27th August, staring at 11.00hrs until 17.00hrs on Saturday 31st August.
