CBA Lecture: County Lines, Human Trafficking and Exploitation

The aim of the talk will be to provide a practical guide to legal professionals on the topic of county lines, with a particular focus on the criminal law implications for individuals involved in cases of human trafficking and exploitation.

Speaker: Gerwyn Wise (Garden Court Chambers)

Gerwyn Wise is a criminal defence barrister at Garden Court Chambers. He is frequently instructed to advise and represent individuals involved in county lines and human trafficking operations, particularly those arising out of gang activity. He has expertise representing children and young adults accused of serious criminal offences in both the Crown Court and Youth Court.

Speaker: Paramjit Ahluwalia (One Pump Court)

Paramjit Ahluwalia is a criminal defence barrister. She is a contributing author to Blackstone’s Criminal Practice in relation to the chapter on Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking, as well as to Bloomsbury Professional ‘Human Trafficking and  Modern Slavery Law and Practice. ‘ In 2019, she was described by the Observer as a rising star for her work in representing society’s vulnerable, fighting human trafficking, modern day slavery and immigration crime. Paramjit has delivered update seminars to the Judicial College on Modern Slavery and the Court of Appeal have referenced her expert assistance in AAJ [2021] EWCA Crim 1278, where the Applicant’s county lines convictions were quashed on the basis of being a victim of trafficking.
