Youth Justice Advocacy Training for Barrister’s 2018

Youth Justice Legal Centre is currently running the following two-day training course on Saturday 3 & 10 March 2018 in central London.

The training can be booked here

Further details on our training can be found here.

The Youth Justice Legal Centre was set up by Just for Kids Law who have a reputation for providing high quality training and has been delivering training to solicitors, barristers and youth justice professionals for a number of years – last year, 100% of the lawyers we trained said they would recommend our training to others.

“By the end of the day I felt much less scared about the thought of going to the Youth Court for the first time. I now feel very well-equipped for representing children in the criminal justice system and confident that I will do a good job thanks to Just for Kids Law!”

– Pupil barrister, Doughty Street Chambers

This training is an essential course for all pupils and junior barristers who will be appearing in the youth court and representing children in the adult criminal courts. You may well be aware of the Lord Chief Justice’s comments –

“[I]t would be difficult to conceive of an advocate being competent to act in a case involving young witnesses or defendants unless the advocate had undertaken specific training.”

– R v Grant-Murray and Henry; R v McGill, Hewitt and Hewitt [2017] EWCA 1228, para 226

The Bar Standards Board will shortly be interesting a registration requirement for barristers who practice in the youth court and to require them adhere to the BSB’s Youth Proceedings Competences. The Inns of Court College of Advocacy (ICCA) also encourages anyone practising in youth justice to undertake specialist  training.

YJLC’s training involves interactive exercises and break out sessions delivered by leading youth justice lawyers and young people. The course involves the participation of young people with experience of the criminal justice system and includes exercises and role plays to develop participants’ engagement and communication skills with children and young people.

Please do not hesitate to contact Petra Jodlova ([email protected]) if you have any questions regarding the training and if you haven’t already, please sign up to our free legal updates here.
