NOT the Monday Message

Tonight, Monday the 18th August, my beloved Burnley FC begin the Premier League season against Chelsea. They will have to fight for every point in the campaign.  I suspect that I shall return to the analogous fortunes of the mighty Clarets more than once during my term of office. 14 days after the Clarets defeat Chelsea I take over the management of the CBA from Nigel who has returned so to speak, to his Orient.

Like Sean Dyche who has led my team to the Promised Land I have been doing my own pre-season in preparation for my year. Kick off for me is the 1st of September and then I shall set out my plan of campaign.

Like Burnley needs the support of its fans I need yours in this the close season, on three important topics. Each is vital to your future.
Over the course of the last 12 months Nigel and I have received much correspondence from members of the Bar expressing their concerns about a wide variety of subjects including:

  • The payment of referral fees and other similar practices;
  • Advocates doing work beyond their competence for both the defence and prosecution to the detriment of either their lay client or to the detriment of the wider public;
  • The question of the ease of transfer between the professions;
  • And hardship for the junior bar.

The time has come for us to take action to address these issues. We though need your cooperation. I urge you to write to me to set our your complaints.

Second Leveson. You will find the appeal from Leveson LJ HERE. I urge you to make a contribution to his review. Similarly you will find HERE the CRGS survey. This too is of vital importance to our future.

I urge you to take the time to help us to help you.

Yours,

Tony Cross QC
Vice-Chairman of the Criminal Bar Association
