Monday Message 07.07.25

The Leveson Report:

We have been promised a copy of the Leveson Report in advance of its full publication. Ats the time of writing this message, on the 7th July 2025, we have yet to receive the document. We will consider its contents, the quality of the data upon which it is based and its recommendations. Once we have read the report we will seek the views of the membership. After that, we will provide a considered response to the recommendations.

We are disappointed that some of the recommendations are being leaked to the press and commented upon by the Government before the publication of the full report, because that has resulted in calls for us to comment before we have the opportunity to be properly informed.

The criminal Bar is integral to the functioning of the criminal justice system. Whatever changes the Government makes, much of the burden of making any recommendations work will fall on criminal Barristers. Progress is best made when all those who have to implement a plan work together towards a common and achievable goal. This requires a demonstration of courtesy, respect and active listening.

The Law Commission – Appeals:

We are extremely grateful to Andrew Thomas KC of Lincoln House Chambers and to Sebastian Walker from 36 Crime for their excellent work in preparing our response to the consultation by the Law Commission as to appellate law. Our response can be read here.

Yours,

Mary Prior KC
Chair, The Criminal Bar Association
