Monday Message – 13.11.23

Dear colleagues and friends,

As members of one of the Learned Professions expectations of us are high.  We are required to constantly update our knowledge of the law and its application and ensure we are skilled to assist the courts.  At the current time, with the Criminal Bar striving to conduct as many cases as expeditiously as possible, it is difficult to find the capacity for additional training.  However, a unique feature of our profession is the sharing of learning between us, whether it is in robing rooms around England and Wales, on-line or in more formal surroundings.  Below is a list of Seminars and Courses provided by our Education and Training Committee, ably lead by Charlotte Newell KC and and Paul Jarvis, and assisted by Aaron Dolan.  If you are able to join us please do, it will be lovely to see you.

RASSO

No one will have missed that there are currently fewer RASSO Counsel available for instruction.  We know that RASSO cases require the most skilled advocates to conduct them, they are witness intensive and the fees do not reflect the nature of the work involved.  RASSO Counsel describe feeling privileged and proud to prosecute and defend RASSO cases, which is why we want government to respect and invest in the expertise and work of Criminal Barristers who chose this type of work.

The CBA are launching a new RASSO training programme at the Inner Temple on Friday 24th November 2023. If you are either or both a RASSO Prosecutor or Defence Counsel please contact Aaron to be invited to the RASSO Launch.
