Chairman’s Update:
As we prepare for what I hope will be an enjoyable Annual Dinner this evening, you may like to read this PRESS RELEASE trailing my speech. You may also like to see the article on Page 2 of today’s Guardian newspaper HERE. If we stand firm and articulate our message properly and fully, we can make ourselves heard.
I shall also use the Dinner to announce our plans for new CBA Bursaries for means-tested junior tenants. A useful boost to the vital support provided to pupils through the Kalisher Fund, which in turn receives money from every diner this evening.
I shall circulate the full speech once delivered.
Next weekend, Saturday 26th May, we have another superb CBA Education Conference, with a keynote address from Hughes LJ, see below for full details. To be held at the IET in Savoy Place, this conference is not to be missed. Our Director of Education Jonathan Laidlaw QC and the Education Committee put enormous effort into constructing these events and attracting star speakers. I hope to see you there.

CBA Conference
Conviction and Beyond
Saturday 26th May 2012
All day Saturday event (venue to be confirmed) which will include speakers from the Judiciary, Academia and Court of Appeal.
The event will focus on post-conviction matters including (a) recent developments in sentencing (b) confiscation (c) ancillary orders, including Sexual Offences Prevention Orders (d) Sentencing Guidelines (e) A practical guide to the process for Attorney General references and (f) sentencing issues in the Magistrate’s Court

2012 Kalisher Scholarship Trust Event
The 2012 Kalisher Scholarship Trust event will be a staged reading of two Agatha Christie plays, ‘Butter in a Lordly Dish’ and ‘Personal Call’. Those hoping to participate include Martin Shaw, Felicity Kendal, Maxine Peake, Ray Fearon, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Mark Farrelly, and will be performed thanks to the generosity of Agatha Christie’s estate and Bill Kenwright Ltd. Set in the world of the 1950s, the plays will be fully miked and promise an evening of laughter, legal intrigue and murder mystery.
The event will be held in Middle Temple Hall, at 6.30pm on Sunday 20th May. Tickets cost £50, and are available now from Middle Temple (0207 427 4800).
All proceeds from the event go toward scholarships for talented students who, without the support provided by the Trust, would be unable to reach the Criminal Bar.

Criminal Law Week – updates (issue 19)
Key updates from this week’s issue of Criminal Law Week:
Dangerous dog offences
New sentencing guidelines applying to offenders aged 18 or over sentenced on or after August 20, 2012 (CLW/12/19/20).
Custody time limits
Approach Crown Court should take when deciding whether to extend time limits under the Prosecution of Offences Act 1985, s.22: R. (McAuley) v. Crown Court at Coventry, D.C. (CLW/12/19/1).
Disclosure
Prosecution must apply to the court before disclosing an informant’s identity without his consent: R. (W.V.) v. C.P.S., D.C. (CLW/12/19/2).
Conspiracy to cheat public revenue – basis on which to assess the size and seriousness of the conspiracy when sentencing participants in a missing-trader carousel fraud: R. v. Randhawa and ors, C.A. (CLW/12/19/6).
Confiscation order
Whether offenders in joint venture jointly and severally liable for the purposes of assessing their “benefit”: R. v. Lambert (Richard) and Walding (Ian Alexander), C.A. (CLW/12/19/8).
Costs

It’s the very first event of its kind for us and we’re hoping to make it a biennial event for the years to come.
The response from our supporters has be fantastic but we still have a few places left to sell and it would be simply wonderful if we could sell out for the event.
We shall be having an auction which will include a Gormley, a Grayson Perry, a Maggi Hambling and a Mary Feddon as well as the chefs Table at Gordon Ramsey’s restaurant at Claridges and a master class for two with the world renowned chef Jean Christophe Novelli .
All in all a great night guaranteed but we’re grateful for all the support you can muster for us
South Eastern Circuit Bar Mess Foundation Advanced International Advocacy Course

The aim of the South Eastern Circuit Bar Mess Foundation Advanced International Advocacy Course at Keble College, Oxford course, is to encourage and develop the highest standards of advocacy amongst practitioners. The course is the most demanding and intensive of any advocacy course in the UK, and was described by a former presiding judge of the Circuit as the “Best Advanced Course in the UK”

South Eastern Circuit Florida Criminal Law Advocacy course
The South Eastern Circuit seeks a Silk with a criminal practice to attend the South Eastern Circuit Florida Criminal Law Advocacy course, held at the University of Florida, Gainesville, from Sunday 5 August to Friday 10 August 2012. The successful applicant is expected to take part in advocacy exercises, to provide feedback to participants and, he or she will demonstrate qualities marking him or her out as an appropriate ambassador of our profession. The course fees, accommodation and flights are funded by the Florida Bar Association. Successful candidates will be expected to travel to Gainesville in time to attend the course on 5 August 2012 and if you would like further details, please click here.
