Research Assistance

Bath University are seeking criminal barristers to participate in an exciting, innovative ESRC-funded research project to be conducted at the University of Hertfordshire.  Barristers who participate will be financially reimbursed for taking part, and taking part presents valuable opportunities for evidencing reflective practice for Continuing Professional Development. We would really appreciate it if you could please share the study information (below) with barristers at your Chambers. This opportunity is likely to be particularly appropriate for pupil and/or junior barristers.

Giving evidence in court proceedings: Perspectives of mock witnesses, justice system professionals and mock jurors

What is the study about?

  •  The study is examining the experiences of mock witnesses when they give evidence in court during a mock trial and how they are perceived by barristers and a mock jury.
  •  Half of the mock witnesses have been assessed as being vulnerableand will receive Special Measures to assist them when giving evidence.

What will taking part involve?

  •  Reviewing case materials and planning examination questions (pre-mock trial).
  •  Conducting examination with witnesses who have and have not been assessed as vulnerable.
  •  Participating in an interview with a member of the research team, to discuss your experience and perceptions of the witnesses (post-mock trial).
  •  The study will take place at a replica Crown Court (University of Hertfordshire) – you can take part on one or more of the following dates:

o    Friday 10th May

o    Saturday 11th May

o    Tuesday 21st May

o    Wednesday 22nd May

What are the benefits of taking part?

  •  A rate of £400 per day, plus travel expenses.
